IDOT New Mississippi River Bridge & Approach Ramps
Geotechnology was awarded a 24-month subsurface utilities engineering (SUE) contract for various routes in various counties through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Region 5, District 8 as a result of a qualifications based procurement.
In June 2008, the first SUE work order under this contract was issued. The task is related to the design and construction of the New Mississippi River Bridge (MRB) approach ramps from Route 3 to the river. Geotechnology performed SUE quality levels D, C and B services within a 400-foot wide right-of-way area from the Mississippi River to 300 feet east of Route 3, approximately 3,200 feet. Geotechnology and its subconsultant Engineering Design Source, Inc. obtained and researched records from various utility companies, located and surveyed visible features and designated locations of underground utilities through use of geophysical surveying.
Based on the SUE Quality level B information obtained and after review by IDOT and the MRB design team, Quality Level A information was obtained at 22 selected utility sites. Potholing to verify the underground utility and determine its size and depth was performed using Geotechnology’s air knife and crews.
