We were responsible for the geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing services for the construction of a six-story academic building.
We performed a subsurface exploration and provided foundation analysis and recommendations for the six-story $120 million structure, which featured an underground service loading dock. The foundation systems consisted of Augered Cast-In-Place piles. Our team explored the subsurface conditions, performed a site-specific seismic study and provided geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of the building.
High groundwater conditions encountered at the site during construction hindered the process of foundation installation. The client requested consultation to determine what methods could be employed to allow for the installation of the piles. A dewatering system of deep wells was designed and constructed to lower the groundwater table. It was also recommended that a permanent under-slab drainage system be incorporated to help protect the slab against a future increase of the water table.
In addition to geotechnical engineering, field engineers and field representatives provided full-time construction observation and materials testing services. These services included observation and testing of Augered Cast-In-Place piles, static pile load tests, soil and asphalt placement, backfill of utility trenches, reinforcing steel placement and grout and concrete sampling and testing.
