TDOT Geotechnical Seismic Manual

Only a few states in the nation have areas with higher earthquake design acceleration coefficients than West Tennessee. As a result, the Tennessee Department of Transportation selected Geotechnology along with University of Memphis, to develop their Geotechnical Seismic Manual (GSM). This manual will provide uniform design practices for the TDOT and consultant personnel preparing geotechnical reports and contract plans for highway and bridge projects in the state. The proposed manual will be used in conjunction with the Seismic Design Specifications for Highway Bridges (AASHTO LRFD and Seismic Specifications).
The GSM will provide the guidelines normally required in performing geotechnical investigations, site specific seismic studies, seismic slope stability analysis, liquefaction analysis and mitigation for transportation projects. It will also provide recommended safety factor values for liquefaction analysis. When seismic analysis of regular embankments, bridge approaches, and bridge abutments indicate potential instability, the GSM will provide recommendations for mitigation techniques, as well as QA/QC measures to be taken upon adapting these techniques.
